This project expands the Anchorage Museum’s role as a center for art, culture, and civic life in Alaska. Designed by a team of Alaskans, the addition brings new gallery space for the Museum’s permanent collection, flexible exhibit areas, and community-focused gathering spaces, all while expressing a distinctly Northern design language rooted in material, climate, and context.
The building cantilevers over sidewalks, connecting museum spaces to the street and city. Its exterior features Alaskan yellow cedar and zinc panels, designed to weather naturally and complement earlier additions of brick and glass. Inside, reclaimed pine floors and daylight-filled galleries reflect a grounded, evolving North.
The expansion supports the Museum’s mission to connect people and broaden understanding of the Arctic. It enables ongoing exhibition of both historic works and contemporary pieces. Informal spaces invite reflection, conversation, and deeper public engagement. The project reinforces the Museum’s civic presence while supporting Anchorage’s identity as a cultural hub.
