Eielson Air Force Base, Alaska
32,000 SF
This facility serves as the primary training center for F-35A pilots at Eielson Air Force Base, housing six Lockheed Martin simulator pods supported by one of the most sophisticated training networks in the world. The secure SAPF environment includes briefing and debriefing rooms, mission training offices, and workspaces for Air Force personnel and Lockheed Martin technicians. The building’s exterior form reflects the sharp, aerodynamic lines of the aircraft itself, with a curved metal roof and angular canopy that create a recognizable presence on the installation.
Energy efficiency and cold-region performance were central to the design. The building uses a super-insulated envelope with R-40 walls and R-70 roofs, heat-recovery ventilation, and high-efficiency LED lighting. These systems helped the project achieve LEED Silver certification. As the first F-35 project at Eielson to go out to bid, it set a strong precedent by delivering award-winning design while coming in roughly fifteen percent under budget. The project was honored with a 2019 USAF Design Award, recognizing its architectural quality and technical excellence.
