This project supports the seasonal workforce that delivers essential visitor services at Glacier Bay National Park and Preserve. The design replaces outdated housing with a new two-story residential facility and an adjacent maintenance building. Housing includes single and double occupancy rooms, shared lounges, reading areas, laundry spaces, and a project room to support creative downtime. Designed for comfort and connection, the building provides a home-like setting during Alaska’s long seasonal shifts.
The site’s cultural and environmental sensitivity required a thoughtful approach. The housing is elevated on helical piles to avoid disturbing glacial soils and the surrounding old-growth forest. Originally envisioned as a U-shaped structure, the design was reworked to an L-shape to reduce snow drift, simplify construction, and increase occupant privacy.
