The Sitka Rocky Gutierrez Airport is undergoing a long-awaited transformation to improve the experience for passengers, airline staff, and security personnel. This expansion and renovation project modernizes the aging terminal while maintaining full airport operations throughout construction.

Designed in close partnership with Alaska Airlines, Delta, and the City & Borough of Sitka, the project addresses chronic challenges around passenger circulation, baggage handling, and screening logistics. The upgrades aim to maximize efficiency and comfort while remaining sensitive to the constraints of a tight site and limited funding.

Additions to the terminal will simplify wayfinding, expand service capacity, and reduce bottlenecks, especially during peak travel seasons. Interior renovations include thoughtful updates that elevate the experience for both travelers and employees.

Maintaining operations during construction has required deliberate phasing and precise coordination. Blending virtual design reviews with hands-on, on-site sessions helped align priorities while staying accountable to budget and schedule goals. The result is a right-sized investment that makes a meaningful difference for Sitka’s travelers and economy.

Harsh climate conditions and high development costs added complexity to the site planning. ExD responded with energy-efficient design strategies, cold climate systems, and temperature-controlled technologies that reduce operating costs while maintaining precise storage conditions year-round.
