As one of Explore Design’s founding Principals, John has spent his career building more than structures; he’s built a legacy of collaboration, mentorship, and design excellence across Alaska. From hiring the firm’s first team members to shaping its enduring culture, John’s influence is evident in every part of ExD’s story.
He believes the true reward of architecture lies in transforming ideas into tangible experiences that connect people and place. Though technology has changed the way drawings take form, John says the essence of the work, bringing ideas from the mind to the built world, remains the same.
Beyond the studio, John gives back as a mentor and advisor, guiding emerging professionals through his work with the United Way, the Alaska Institute of Architects, Alaska Professional Design Council, and the Construction Specifications Institute. He finds inspiration in Alaska’s beauty and challenge, where mountains, climate, and creativity continually meet.

This project called for close collaboration with a large team of civil, structural, landscape, and mechanical engineers to design a series of administrative and maintenance buildings on a 250-acre undeveloped site. The challenge was creating thoughtful, functional structures that complement and respect the surrounding memorial grounds, providing a sense of shelter and purpose within a deeply meaningful landscape.
A collection of thoughts that drive the team at Explore Design.
