Notable Projects

Sorry, we couldn't find any projects.

Sonja brings a global perspective and an adventurous spirit to Explore Design. Originally licensed as an architect in Germany and Finland, she now channels her curiosity and creativity into projects across Alaska, guiding designs from first sketch to construction with both precision and imagination. Her international experience has sharpened her eye for detail and her appreciation for how culture, climate, and collaboration shape the built environment.

Sonja’s journey to architecture started early. At the age of 16, she began working as a summer architectural intern in Luxembourg, and by 18, she was fully enrolled in an architectural education program at Brighton University in England, UK. Since then, she’s found her passion in travel and translating her ideas into both joy and connection. Her proudest achievement was the design and construction of twelve unique treehouses in Lower Saxony, Germany.

Outside of work, Sonja splits her time between the mountains, her workshop, and caring for her young family. In summer, she builds furniture, renovates her home, and even crafts saunas—always finding new ways to turn ideas into reality. When she’s not covered in sawdust, she’s likely out skiing, fishing, or exploring Alaska’s backcountry. For Sonja, creativity doesn’t end with design; it’s a way of life, shaped by curiosity and the landscapes she calls home.

Featured Project

This project has been a rewarding experience for Sonja, offering the opportunity to collaborate closely with the local community on a project that will serve the next generation of students. Reimagining and redesigning an active school presented both unique challenges and lasting rewards, as the team worked to enhance functionality, flexibility, and pride in a space that continues to evolve along with its students.
